What To Do When You Injure Your Teeth

Posted on 1/15/2026 by Highridge Dental Care Folsom
Football players diving and tackling one another causing a potential injury. Ouch! A dental injury can be a scary experience, leaving you with both physical discomfort and a lot of questions. Whether it's a chipped tooth from a rogue popcorn kernel or a more serious accident, knowing how to react quickly and appropriately can significantly impact the outcome and reduce long-term complications. Let's walk through some important steps you should take if you find yourself facing dental pain and a possible dental injury.

Immediate Assessment

The very first thing to do is assess the situation. Take a deep breath and try to stay calm. Determine the extent of the injury. Is it a minor chip, a cracked tooth, or has a tooth been completely knocked out? Are you experiencing bleeding? Note the location and severity of any dental pain. Knowing these details will be helpful when you seek professional help.

Control Bleeding

If there's bleeding, apply gentle but firm pressure to the area with a clean gauze pad or cloth. Hold the pressure for about 15-30 minutes, or until the bleeding stops. If the bleeding is heavy or doesn't stop after a reasonable amount of time, it's crucial to seek immediate medical attention at an emergency room.

Relieve Pain

Dental pain can be intense. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage the discomfort. A cold compress applied to the outside of your cheek near the injured area can also help reduce swelling and numb the pain. Avoid applying heat, as this can worsen inflammation.

Recover Any Lost Tooth Fragments

If a tooth has been chipped or fractured, carefully collect any pieces you can find. These fragments might be able to be reattached by your dentist. Store the fragments in milk or saliva to keep them hydrated.

Handle a Knocked-Out Tooth Properly

If a tooth has been completely knocked out (avulsed), time is of the essence. The sooner you can get to a dentist, the higher the chance of saving the tooth. Handle the tooth very carefully. Pick it up by the crown (the part you see in your mouth), not the root. Gently rinse it with water if it's dirty, but do not scrub it or remove any tissue fragments.

Ideally, the best thing to do is to try to replant the tooth back into its socket immediately. If you can do this, gently push the tooth back into place, making sure it's facing the correct way. Bite down gently on a clean cloth to hold it in position. If you can't replant the tooth, store it in milk, saliva, or a tooth-preserving solution (if available) and get to a dentist as quickly as possible.

Contact Your Dentist Immediately

Regardless of the severity of the dental injury, it's vital to contact your dentist as soon as possible. Even what seems like a minor chip can sometimes involve underlying damage that needs professional attention. Explain the situation clearly and follow their instructions. They may advise you to come in immediately or schedule an appointment for the near future.

Follow-Up Care

After your initial treatment, it's essential to follow your dentist's instructions carefully. This might involve taking antibiotics to prevent infection, using a special mouthwash, or avoiding certain foods. Regular check-ups will also be necessary to monitor the healing process and ensure that there are no long-term complications. Remember, proactive care is key to restoring your oral health and preventing future problems after a dental injury.
